Many insiders believe it is increasingly likely that the ex-chancellor and Liz Truss will be the final contenders - but Penny Mordaunt is hopeful of breaking their stranglehold on the race
But Ms Mordaunt is also understood to be, in particular by Liz Truss. A supporter said: “My fear is that the right will coalesce around Liz and push Penny into third place. That is the clear direction of travel.”
But even as the stragglers push to make it through to the first round, those from more confident teams are already lobbying MPs to pledge their second preferences once their preferred candidate is knocked out. One MP said: “My battery’s down to 4 per cent, I’ve spent the whole day trying to dodge calls.”
An ally of Ms Truss said: “It’s important to make sure you always keep the membership in mind.” One of Ms Mordaunt’s backers added: “You have to hold some policy back for later in the campaign – if you think you’re going to get that far.”
