It’s a form of housing that 4.5 million households rely on in England and Wales. But despite being a 2019 manifesto commitment for the Conservatives, it has languished in the long grass since first being announced by former prime minister Theresa May.Now it will be pushed through by “reformer in chief”, Housing Secretary, Michael Gove.
Mr Gove’s bill will become the first major shakeup of private renting since the 1988 Housing Act deregulated this part of the housing market in favour of private landlords by introducingThe bill has the support of No 10 and concerns about whether landlords will still be able to evict tenants forSecretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove .
Last year, Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, dropped compulsory housebuilding targets for local areas when some Conservative MPs threatened to rebel against the Government’s Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill., coupled with a lack of affordable homes to buy, caused the private rental sector to swell in recent decades, expanding by 63 per cent from 2.8 million to 4.5 million between 2007 and 2017.
The contents of the Renters’ Reform Bill are still being finalised by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities .to help renters cope with rising living costs, told“I still think there’s a question over whether or not renters should be given some compensation to help with the cost of moving if they are evicted because a landlord is making a commercial decision [to sell],” she told
