With a major bank predicting a nine per cent fall in cash payments by 2028, our readers have weighed in

"I admit cards are the easiest way to pay in regards to online shopping, but we need to keep our cash options, or every person that sells a small amount of items, like car booters and surplus veg, will need to pay for a card machine, and it's not on.""It just seems to be another way of controlling everything we do and eradicating our freedoms once and for all – a dystopian society is imminent.""The tooth fairy will have a job with a card.

"We are being bullied into these modern ideas – online shopping, cashless society, being told to 'go online' when trying to phone council, doctors, or any business! Makes life very hard for many people who don't have computers or modern technology!""Not all of the elderly can access the internet. When my mam died, I sorted dad's monies into the local Halifax so he could get to the bank with the least of problems – not long after this, the local branch closed.

"This meant that Dad had to ask me to get his money from a cashpoint as he wasn't okay with using the hole in the wall. The elderly need to be able to access their money face-to-face with a person, not from a hole in the wall. This cashier may be the only person they speak to that day.

"So when there's a problem with the internet, how can she pay for goods? So is it the bank's fault? No, it's ours! It is so easy to use cards, but I am making more of an effort to pay with cash to try to ensure it's still necessary. "Pocket money and tips will all be traceable and maybe even taxable. Using cash can also make budgeting easier. You can't spend more than is in your pocket."
