China is one of the last major countries clinging onto a zero-Covid policy which has placed tens of millions of people under strict restrictions. Now it seems China might also be censoring footage of the World Cup...

The South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong newspaper critical of the Chinese government, reported that the same editing was seen on CCTV’s broadcast of Japan v Costa Rica and Australia v Tunisia.

‘Of course, there are going to be times when you still see crowd shots – wider shots, after some goals when a cutaway shot would be too jarring etc – but there is clear reduction.’The idea that most of the world has moved on from strict measures is supremely embarrassing to the ruling Chinese Communist Party led by Xi Jinping.

It’s possible that any censorship was introduced in response to this, while undoctored feeds are thought to have been shown online by web companies which are less easily controlled by censors. Some still photographs of maskless spectators have also appeared in articles on Chinese websites.
