It’s clear the pitch clock has shaved time off the game, but what about the concerns that injuries would go up and velocity go down? It’s complicated. Our experts dive into the numbers.
In the meantime, pitchers like Scherzer are trying to be proactive. In theory, the pitch clock can subtract from the amount of time a pitcher spends on his feet. But that works both ways: less time on the mound while working, less time in the dugout resting. Scherzer joked that he spends his time in-between innings pacing in the dugout. He’s not one to rest. He hates sitting down. He may sit for a minute. But then he’s back up, pacing the floor.
If — and Scherzer stressed that word, if — velocity and injuries become issues, then Scherzer said he plans to look for positives in the situation. In that scenario, he said, it would be vital for pitchers to learn to throttle their stuff so they can last six innings or so before handing off to a bullpen featuring fresher arms.
“They used to do that on every pitch; you had time to gather and recommit,” Showalter said. “But also, hopefully, it will show up in less injuries. In some cases, it might be more. But it’s affecting 26-year-old people as much as 36-year-old people. People talk about older pitchers. It’s not just them — it’s everybody.”The Mets, in particular, experienced a case of an older pitcher dealing with some pitch-clock troubles.
Overall, the consensus points to pitchers gaining an advantage with the clock compared to batters because they still can dictate action and tempo. Many big leaguers spent time this winter experimenting with what 15 seconds feels like by practicing for the clock so they wouldn’t feel rushed mentally or physically. Some around the game say that the mental part likely will be a lot tougher than the physical part: after all, these guys are professional athletes.
