Israel bombings near a Gaza hospital have escalated tensions during ongoing heavy fighting with Hamas.
Climate activists during a protest in London against the Rosebank oil field west of Shetland, which was approved in September said the areas chosen had the best potential for rapid production, with the aim of improving the country’s energy security.Rishi Sunak said he wanted to “max out” North Sea oil and gas reserves
The announcement was welcomed by the oil and gas industry, which pointed out that around 75 per cent of the UK’s energy needs are still provided by fossil fuels and that new licences were needed to prevent the country’s reliance on imports increasing further. “Instead they’re being ignored so Rishi Sunak can pander to corporate interests, with licences for fossil fuels that’ll make no difference to bills, do nothing for energy security, and produce yet more profits for dizzyingly wealthy companies like Shell.”
NSTA chief executive Stuart Payne said: “Ensuring that the UK has broad options for energy security is at the heart of our work and these licences were awarded in the expectation that the licensees will get down to work immediately.”added: “As recognised by the independent Climate Change Committee, we’ll continue to need oil and gas over the coming decades as we deliver net zero.
