After BellaHadid updated fans on her recovery from treatment for Lyme disease, Vogue hears from other women about their experiences of the condition.

In terms of treatment, I take a lot of herbal medicines for my organs as my pancreas, liver, kidneys and gallbladder are all struggling. I find antibiotics are too hard on my body. If I come down with an infection or virus which causes a massive spike in my Lyme symptoms I will have to do herbal IV infusion with antibiotics or antivirals, for weeks at a time.

I practise a lot of self-care: I take baths, make time for sleep and rest, eat well and pick up the phone to a friend. Throughout my journey, I’ve learnt to stand up for myself. Don’t let doctors or anyone else tell you it’s in your head or that you are making it up. You know your body better than anyone.

These days, I am lucky to be around 80 per cent recovered. I haven’t had any Lyme treatment for five years now and see myself as in remission, rather than cured. I took a combination of antibiotics for 18 months from an infectious disease consultant based in the US who has lots of experience in treating Lyme disease. I still have to watch what I eat – avoiding sugar, gluten, processed foods and alcohol – and avoid getting too tired or stressed, otherwise my symptoms will flare up.

The biggest misconception about Lyme disease is that it’s easy to treat. It can be easy to treat in the early stages, but if you don’t see a rash after a tick bite within the first few weeks , diagnosis can be missed or delayed for a long time, which makes it more difficult to treat. More awareness of how to prevent tick bites and what to do if you are bitten will help more people with acute Lyme disease access early treatment.
