Asked whether “Red Wall” voters might feel apathetic about electing another politician after the recent chaos in Westminster, Mr Johnson said: “They may be a bit suspicious, maybe there hasn’t been adequate effort to explain the devolution deal.”
“I was always highly critical of the phrase, I think it stood for nothing, and whatever the Government wanted it to stand for,” he told“Areas like Hull need major investment to help them compete with out parts of the country. As welcome as funding is for a few projects, that doesn’t change the ability of an area to compete.
“People in places like South Yorkshire voted for this government – many of them voting Conservative for the first time in their lives – on a promise to level up this country.
