Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation speech is rightly receiving. Its thoughtfulness, insight and deep dignity spoke volumes about the kind of leadership she has always shown, but it equally spoke to the kind of human being she is.
For me, the only surprise was that some of those praising that same speech seemed to think that Nicola was somehow showing a new side to herself or revealing new hidden qualities. Nothing could be further from the truth.is exactly the kind of leadership and exactly the kind of human being who has occupied the office of First Minister for every single day during eight long years. It was Nicola Sturgeon as she is, the very same person she has always been.
At a time when politics has been populated by ill-disciplined, unserious, and self-serving chameleons, it is maybe little wonder that Nicola stood out and stood up for democratic values that constantly challenge us to reach for greater levels of dignity and depth. That resignation speech and the manner of Nicola’s leaving demonstrated, one more time, just how lucky we were to have her for all of this time.The coming leadership contest will offer us the chance to reflect and renew.
Because, at the moment, the unionist case doesn’t amount to a single sentence, never mind an actual strategy. . No , no to a referendum and no to democracy. At some point soon though, unionism will have to wake up to the reality that denying democracy is always destined to be a dead end.
