'I have lots of friends who have been through this experience. And I’ve seen what that experience has done to their lives' Andrew Garfield spoke to PatrickStrud after a surprise performance in a charity play for male sexual abuse victims
Garfield’s role in the performance could scarcely have been further from that of the blockbusterfilms he starred in, and was, in its unfiltered expression, more akin to his devastating portrayal of Prior Walter, a man living with AIDS in, Garfield performed the words of a man surviving sexual abuse who worked on this project.
All the performers wore the same, specially designed multi-coloured T-shirt on stage, in a symbol of kinship surrounding a subject matter that remains taboo. Survivors UK estimates that one in six men will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, but many take decades to speak out. One man addressed himself at the age the abuse occurred. “You did not deserve the terrible punishment inflicted on you and it was totally outside your control. You were and are a beautiful wonderful and lovely child. You will realise your true loving nature eventually. Seek out those whose actions prove they care and are consistent. You are loved.”
“This is something that is close to my heart,” he said, “because I have lots of friends who have been through this experience. And I’ve seen what that experience has done to their lives: the struggle that has created, and the injustice and unfairness, the pain and inability to connect — and the lack of safety they feel, just leaving their room in the morning in some cases. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to care about something like that.
