In 2020, women were three times more likely to die by suicide during or up to six weeks after pregnancy compared with 2017-19 🔴 It would be easy to put this kind of increase solely down to the effect of the pandemic, but is there more to it?
“It’s very difficult to assess somebody who’s acutely unwell, particularly if you haven’t met them before. It just emphasises that, particularly [in perinatal mental health], there’s no substitute for seeing people face-to-face.”For 43-year-old Catherine France, the effect was profound. She gave birth to her second baby on 24 March 2020, less than 24 hours after Boris Johnson announced the country was going into lockdown.
Despite this, France adds, “it took me a long time to ask for any help – probably a lot later than I should have – but in the end, when my son was around 18 months old, I had to go to the doctors and just say, ‘Look, I can’t cope.’ I had to do it over the phone too, but I wasFrance’s experience of feeling abandoned postnatally is far from unique – many more women got in touch with similar experiences.
While the pandemic undoubtedly exacerbated barriers to postnatal mental health support, it’s important to note that this is not a new problem. “Postnatal support has always been the Cinderella of the service,” says Janet Fyle, a midwife and professional policy adviser at the Royal College of Midwives .
