'It was clear they wanted you to conform.' 🟢What being in Qatar was like for England fans
“I had an issue at the Iran game where I had to throw a flag in the bin. That was within 90 minutes of landing in the country, so that was one of my first experiences of the World Cup. It made me very angry; I thought at the time maybe this is a Qatari police officer who’s just freelancing. But“The USA game, I wore a T-shirt with rainbow colouring, I had loads of security guards come and look at me, speaking into their radios.
England fan Malcolm Hirst had the same experience, though he says he generally felt “safe” staying in Al Sadd. “I brought out an England flag with rainbow colours on and I’ve got T-shirts with the same – I had problems with both,” he adds. “The T-shirt they finally let that in, the flag was confiscated twice within the stadiums. The final time I didn’t get it back.
“The story that’s not been out there is the lack of control and authority Fifa had within the stadiums. The police made their own decisions. First they said they were checking the size, then they said, ‘You know why.’ They said it’s the colours, they’re not allowed. “That was when I felt the most unsafe. Once they tried to take me off and behind some screens which was quite scary. Fortunately a couple of other police said no. One of my flatmates here had to take off his support for
T-shirt. That has taken away some of the enjoyment, but I’ve enjoyed the matches and I’ve enjoyed making friends from around the globe.”but supposedly sold-out stadia. Baker admits he noticed a “distinct lack of atmosphere”, saying: “The England-Iran game was so flat. There was all this impressive infrastructure – but it lacked soul.”
