The former chancellor clashed with Conservative leadership rival Liz Truss on economic proposals yet again as they were grilled at the latest hustings in Cheltenham
, including by scrapping VAT on energy, if he becomes prime minister.
He said: “I think everyone will need some help. Then there are two other groups of people who need more – people on very low incomes and pensioners. Liz’s tax plan is not going to help those people.” Ms Truss said such questions were the “problem with being a woman in politics”, adding: “I am a massive fan of Mrs Thatcher, but this is a different time.”as a Labour idea. “I don’t think profit is a dirty word. The fact it’s become a dirty word in our society is a massive problem,” she said.
