The Bank of Jamaica's new notes aim to cut the risk of counterfeiting and improve security
The new notes will also include the creation of a brand new $2,000 note.Speaking on the newly-created note earlier in the year, Mr Clarke said he hoped the decision to have two former political rivals on the same note would help to promote unity in the Caribbean country.
The upgraded $1,000 bank note will feature the images of Norman Manley and Sir Alexander Bustamante – who are both national heroes. Nanny of the Maroons is still the only woman to feature on Jamaican currency. Jamaica’s first national hero and Pan-Africanist leader, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who will appear alone on the upgraded $100 note. According to Mr Clarke, the new notes are part of the BOJ’s new plans to increase the durability of banknotes and to save money.
