An Iranian-German businessman on death row may have made his last phone call, his daughter fears.

It was the middle of the night when the phone call came.

His daughter was overjoyed to talk to her dad again, but she is tormented by the fear that this phone call was allowed in order for her to say goodbye before his execution. "They're killing him softly in solitary confinement in this death cell. But even if he survives that, they're killing him by hanging him from a crane in public," she said. "They want a public execution for my dad, to send out this message of terror: that anybody who speaks out against the regime, we can do this to you - look at this person that's hanging there."Jamshid Sharmahd was born in Iran, grew up in Germany and has dual nationality.

Gazelle, who grew up in Germany and is now an intensive care nurse in the US, has long campaigned for her father's release, but says she got little support from the German government. "High-level government officials are used to having a lifestyle that enables them to visit the niece who's studying in Paris, or go skiing in Sweden. And this is not possible any more - at least they cannot be secure of that," he said.

Like many people I spoke to, she didn't want her full name or photograph to be publicised because of fears that she, or her family, will be targeted by Iran.
