Seven months ago, Mitchell wasn’t even sure if he’d play again. Last month, he was playing golf with his dad in Dallas, driving it 350 yards off the tee. A few times, he turned to his dad and told him:When Mitchell was 4, his mother, Jody, died in a one-car accident. When he was 9, his father — a bow hunter — fell out of a tree. It was a horrific incident that hospitalized him for nearly five months. A week into his hospital stay, John had a pulmonary embolism in his lungs.
“It freaked me out pretty good,” his father said. “I was like, what is going on? All these things are running through my head” of what it could be. He went on blood thinners and started to feel better after a week and a half. But that didn’t make those first couple of weeks Mitchell spent alone in his apartment — he’d occasionally drive to the Jets facility to pick up meals — any easier. Teammates checked in on him constantly.
Mitchell’s father never envisioned Max as a football player. John Mitchell was a quarterback himself in high school but never quite exerted himself. He often wonders if he could’ve had a football career with a little more effort. “I was kinda wild,” John admits, “and decided to go to LSU and chase girls.”His son played football when he was young but loved baseball. Max was a pitcher, and he’d cry when his dad would take him out of games.
