Legendary football commentator John Motson has died at the age of 77, the BBC has announced.
A much-loved figure among football fans, he had retired from the BBC commentary box in 2018, half a decade after launching his career with the broadcaster.website read: “Legendary commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77.” In 1972, his coverage of Ronnie Radford’s stunning long-ranmge goal for non-league Hereford that helped knock top-flight team Newcastle out of the FA Cup in 1972 led to him receiving top billing on Match of the Day.After Radford rifled in a shot on a mud-soaked pitch, sparking a pitch invasion from delirious Hereford fans, Motson exclaimed: “Oh what a goal. Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford! And the crowd are on the pitch. What a tremendous shot by Ronnie Radford.
Tributes have poured in, with ex-England striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker praising Motson as ” quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed. RIP Motty.”
