EMMA BURKE NEWMAN was killed, tragically, while she was cycling, at the junction of King George V bridge and the Broomielaw on 27 January this year. She was just 22-years-old.
Writing in a blog post published this week for the Pedal on Parliament campaign, her parents reflected on that terrible symbolism. They wrote:"A young woman cyclist, 22 years old, on the cusp of adulthood, has carved out her path in life – devoted to making cities safer and more beautiful for all – but is crushed at the south entrance to the city centre of Glasgow.
This morning I will join many others to begin a ride in Emma’s memory from George Square to Edinburgh for this year’s PoP protest. While her French-American parents cannot be here, their message will be heard – there can be no back-pedalling on making cycling safe. That’s one reason why I’m delighted, for all the turbulence in Scottish politics right now, that the Scottish Greens are continuing our important work in the Scottish Government.
