How Jordan Peele's Nope addresses the fight for Black legacy in Hollywood
Ever since the invention of cinema, Hollywood has built itself on privilege and elitism. We – like the commercialisation and consumerism of its brand – are sold on the concept of movie magic, the stuff that dreams are made of.Despite being an industry worth over $92 billion, conversations still persist on the value of Black art.
And Peele, being the master commentator that he is, draws upon this knowledge in one crucial scene inDuring a health-and-safety meeting between the Haywoods and a production crew near the start of the movie, OJ and Emerald are made to feel like 'the other' as the only two Black crew members on set. It's a notable reference to the genre where, traditionally, Black characters are not seen as the protagonists – their roles only rise to the ranks of sidekick or comic relief. But it also refers to the industry's lack of inclusivity on set and despite the knowledge and experience Black creators bring to the table, their value is viewed as dismissible.'s case, their disrespect leads to reckless attitudes and ignoring basic safety, resulting in an on-set accident.
However, it's emblematic of roles where the world sees you in a limited capacity . It's also worth noting that, like the Black jockey in Muybridge's film, we never find out the name of the chimpanzee playing Gordy.
