Life as a known commodity in the NBA is significantly different. This is Jordan Poole’s new reality. Can he adjust? ✍️ ThompsonScribe
Teams started putting small forwards on Curry, instead of their point guard, giving Curry a bigger and more athletic player to get around, and one with a longer wingspan to contest his shots. And, across the board, the physicality increased as they sought to take away space., back in the day, was probably the biggest adjustment,” Curry said. “I just saw bodies everywhere coming off pick-and-rolls.
He started the season running around like a roach when the lights get cut on. But he was running into a trap. Where before, beating his man off the dribble would get him home free, Poole now was seeing a second line of defense ready to help. The extra dribbling was a product of the improv of creating against what he didn’t quite know was coming.
Curry said the key is to let the game come to you. It’s a losing battle to take on that level of defensive pressure straight up because there are just too many good athletes on defense now. It would stand to reason the way to approach such schemes would be more creativity, more improvisation. But it’s better, Curry and Kerr contend, to simplify. But that requires patience and trust. Giving the ball up and waiting for the moment the defense is relaxed, trusting it will come back.
Off the bench, Poole is averaging 14.1 points and 4.6 assists. He’s shooting just 40.9 percent from the field, including 31 percent of his 3s. “A lot of it is chemistry and a lot of it is the people that I’m in with,” Poole said, “because some people know how to play in our offense right now. Obviously, it’s new players and new people. We have such a unique style and unique cadence, it takes a little bit of time to get used to it. … We’re still trying to get our chemistry right.”
