Judge denies Tupac's Black Panther stepfather compassionate release by S_Fleary1
A US judge has denied the compassionate released of a terminally ill black panther activist who was the stepfather of the late rapper Tupac.He has been in prison for 36 years, after he was convicted for his involvement in a robbery of a Brinks armoured truck, in which a guard and two police officers were killed, in 1984.
His lawyers have campaigned for his released following a diagnosis of “terminal, incurable case of multiple myeloma.”lawyers argued compassionate release should be granted, due to Mr Shakur’s deteriorating health and cited the First Step Act as justification for his release. However, Judge Charles S. Haight denied this and said the act does not apply to convictions which occurred before November 1987.
“This is a difficult case. The government does not question the dire nature of Shakur’s present medical condition. Shakur also submits testimonials which describe his rehabilitation in prison and humanitarian assistance he has rendered to other inmates,” Mr Haight wrote. He continued: “On the other hand, members of the family of the Brinks employee who was killed during the crimes of conviction have written to the Court, expressing their continuing grief and opposition to any reduction in Shakur’s sentence.”website, Mr Shakur received a diagnosis of “life-threatening advanced bone marrow cancer.” The statement added: “He needs treatment and recovery in humane conditions immediately. Mr Shakur is in prison at Lexington Federal Medical Center in Kentucky.
