A silk flower pinned to Katy Perry's lapel and a dramatic headpiece with “merry widow veiling” added a touch of British eccentricity to the ensemble.
Purple is, of course, a colour that’s been associated with royalty since ancient times; it’s no accident that the velvet lining of St Edward’s Crown, the Imperial State Crown and Queen Mary’s Crown are all dyed the same distinctive shade, with Queen Elizabeth II making purple the official colour of
her 1953 Coronation. Perry’s pale pastel take on the regal hue, though, felt like a subtle nod to the occasion without ruffling the feathers of royal apologists or wholly compromising the kitschy-ness that the Grammy winner is known for. Here’s hoping for a similarly glamorous look at tomorrow’s concert.
