A look back at some of the moments beyond the headlines at Villa Park as Everton made it two wins from two by beating Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup
Everton made it back to back wins with another impressive display to knock Aston Villa out of the Carabao Cup.
The victory builds on the momentum created at Brentford and Sean Dyche will hope it carries his team into two significant home games - against Luton Town then Bournemouth. Calvert-Lewin’s instincts enabled him to create for himself at Villa as he stole a short pass from Youri Tielemans, beat Ezri Konsa then ran through on Robin Olsen’s goal. Arnaut Danjuma fought to catch up with him and had a front row view of the striker as he bore down on goal - but waited for the ball to cross the line before he took off.
Key to Everton holding on at the end was the effort of substitute striker Beto - who could, and maybe should, have had a chance to ease the nerves. The striker was played in behind what was then a high back line and looked set to run free on Olsen’s goal and for a perfect opportunity to add to the goal he scored at Doncaster Rovers in the last round. Instead, he was deprived by that opportunity by a linesman’s flag and it really, really did look close.
