EXCLUSIVE: Fresh from the Women’s World Cup, Kelly Somers reveals her exciting pregnancy news to OK! and tells us she’ll keep working for as long as she can before baby’s arrival
But we have to give credit to the other power women in the game.
“I’m excited that my baby is going to be born in a generation with the Lionesses as role models,” she tells us. “At my age, everyone knows someone who’s going through fertility problems or who has a bad story, and I always thought I was going to be one of those stories.” Kelly was diagnosed with endometriosis, but she still had the nagging feeling that there was something more that wasn’t being recognised.
Kelly tells us that when the time came to tell Max they were going to become parents, there was no fanfare announcement. Now she’s sharing her wonderful news publicly, Kelly feels some apprehension about how to approach things on social media.“I mean, the first time I put up a photo with a bump, what is the reaction going to be?” she says.
Having been “hellbent” on a career in football since she was just nine years old, Kelly is determined to keep working for as long as she can before the arrival of her firstborn. “I grew up as very much a ‘girly girl’ and wasn’t really into football, but my mum had always gone to matches with my grandparents. She took me to the Watford v Bolton play-off at Wembley in 1999 and I thought, ‘Hold on, this thing my mum does every Saturday is quite cool.’
