“What if I wrote [a female lead] as a non-left wing, not liberal, not middle class, not educated, not sympathetic character?” asksplaywright April De Angelis in a programme interview, explaining the genesis of her eponymous leading lady. It’s a fair enough provocation – but probably best, then, not to make Kerry the owner of a new tapas restaurant in the vertiginously gentrifying Walthamstow Village.
Kerry doesn’t appear to know anything about either tapas or Walthamstow, which is certainly something of a problem. Her connection to both remains resolutely unexplored for two and a half of the longest hours I have spent in a theatre in 2022, as the least plausible sextet of characters imaginable grinds through a would-be skewering of working class right-wingery and middle-class liberal handwringing.
Ripley, sporting a bewilderingly unironic wardrobe of the finest clothes from the 1980s, attacks this hopeless script with unflagging gusto in Indhu Rubasingham’s production, and makes the most of the very occasional funny line. She describes Stephen’s vegan shoes as looking like “a witch sewed them in the forest”, as this pair’s relationship follows exactly the kind of arc you would expect from a drama in which all plausibility has long since expired.
