Kevin Sinfield's fundraising for Rob Burrow has inspired me to be a better friend ✍️ stefanohat
Would you help a friend? What value do you place on friendship? These questions have niggled me this since seeing the extraordinary ex-rugby league player,, say he “just wanted to be a great friend” after he walked into the centre of Old Trafford stadium before 70,000 Rugby League World Cup final fans to complete his seventh ultra-marathon in seven days. Sinfield had raised some £1.5 million for Motor Neurone Disease charities, a number that has risen further since.
. Burrow has bravely played out this devastatingly degenerative disease’s full impact in public to raise awareness and money to help combat it. In 2021, Sinfield ran 101 miles in 24 hours for MND; in 2020 seven marathons in seven days. The former challenge raised £1m, the latter £2.7m. It is a phenomenal set of achievements.
Like many southerners, I have little affinity with rugby league. Yes, I can recall the legendary commentator Eddie Waring’s iconic description, “it’s up and under”, on Saturday afternoons, but “league” is firmly rooted in the North West of England. It’s a sport intensely loved by aficionados and largely ignored by others.
Today, I could not name a single player unprompted – other than Sinfield and Burrow. Their relationship is testament both to the unique binding power of team-mate camaraderie and the remarkable kindness and generosity of ordinary British people. Sinfield could be a great friend to Burrow without pushing himself to the limits of physical and mental endurance. He does it because he knows that the extremity of his challenges is what captures the public imagination.
Would I do that for a friend? Happily, it’s a hypothetical question. No one has needed my help that much. But how far would I go? What would I give: Time? Practical help? Money? Time is tricky these days – at least, as a teacher, in term time. The most practical help I’ve ever given is driving and moving friends about. However, against much advice, I once lent a friend in need £10k. He paid it back a year later.
