Little by little, Edwards has been addressing the holes in his game. His season averages — 24.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 36.4 percent on 3s — are all career bests. He is seeing what works for his team beyond his scoring, in particular how much the ball movement does for McDaniels’ offensive game. He does so many things to promote flow within an offense — cutting, passing, making quick decisions — and thrives when it is zipping around the half court.
“It’s something we don’t want to take away from him, but we did talk in the timeouts about getting away from that and getting back to moving the ball, and he owned it and was one of the first guys to get the ball moving again,” Finch said. At one point in the fourth quarter against Denver, Edwards held the ball and hoisted a pull-up 3 in front ofAs the Wolves were coming back to the bench following a timeout, Finch glared at Edwards and told him to “run the play.”
The purity of that purpose shines through in Edwards, and it resonates with his teammates. His gravity doesn’t just draw defenses to him; it pulls his teammates along with him. Towns isn’t coming back anytime soon. McLaughlin, the other ballhandler, doesn’t figure to be playing for weeks yet either.
