But instead of having to go through a panel of doctors, just one doctor would be able to provide the diagnosis.

This would mean that transgender people would not have a legal right to access spaces preserved for the sex they are not born with, including toilets. Ms Dodds said: “Labour has said for some time that we need to modernise the Gender Recognition Act . When it was first announced it was groundbreaking, but that was back in 2004, and I think we’ve got a much better understanding of what the indignities are really for trans people when they’re trying to obtain gender recognition certificate.

She added: “The Equality Act, which was a major achievement of the Labour government, mentions the case of a support group for survivors of sexual assault where service providers may believe that it would be a proportionate means to a legitimate end to exclude trans women, for example.
