Keir Starmer is not planning to repeal the highly contentious Illegal Migration Bill But a Labour government would look to make “very quick changes” to the legislation, including overturning plans to deport everyone who enter the UK via small boat
as it was debated in the House of Lords on Wednesday.
But a Labour government would look to make “very quick changes” to the legislation, including overturning one of its most hardline provisions – to place a duty on the home secretary to deport all people who enter the UK via small boat, which critics including the UNHCR have said amounts to a ban on asylum.
A spokesman for Sir Keir told said that Labour would not look to repeal the controversial bill wholesale, instead introducing its own asylum legislation that would override key aspects.whether the party would overturn the deportation duty, the spokesman suggested Labour would move rapidly to scrap the policy to avoid having its own home secretary’s hands tied by the Conservative bill in office.
“We will clearly have to make very quick changes to the legislation because this is completely unworkable and damaging,” he said. “Our policy is to take asylum decisions much faster – that’s what we’ll implement and we will need legislation to do it.
