Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Darren McClelland held thousands in accounts in his name after fraudsters targeted an 80-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man in a 'complex' illegal scheme.
A money launderer who was caught with £250,000 that was linked to an elaborate banking scam dodged jail after a sheriff said he would take his age into account.
A police investigation found the stolen cash was being held in accounts which had been set up by McClelland. Police later described him as a 'money mule' but he was not charged with taking part in the fraudulent scheme. He had been charged with holding £412,240 of dirty cash but prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to the lesser amount.
