The story of a Lancashire drag queen using their experiences to inspire young people across the county

As many towns, people and businesses took part in Pride celebrations during the month of June, Blackburn held its first ever Pride event on Saturday 18th, bringing together crowds of people from different races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations and sexualities to celebrate their differences. The inaugural event was not only the first for Blackburn, but also for the drag queen that hosted the celebrations.

Ambyr Leaf, also known as Ryan, lives in Preston and was approached to host Blackburn Pride by one of the organisers. On the day, Ambyr performed and sang live, but most poignantly, shared stories and hosted a Q&A on his own personal experiences, including an attack that happened to him in Preston Town Centre on 13 July 2019.

Despite the attack shattering Ryan's confidence, it also "fired something" within him and gave him the want to explore more things, hence the birth of Ambyr Leaf and the drag lifestyle, performances and shows that came along with it. "I dabbed in drag before, but didn't do anything serious and then around two years ago, Ambyr was born," he added.
