Sick of turkey yet? Time for a butter pie then

Lancashire's history is rich, dark, and all-in-all, pretty all-encompassing. Lancashire witches, the Cotton Panic, famous faces and Colne adventurers.

Luther was just one man in the town of Wittenberg, Saxony, a province of the Holy Roman Empire. But his actions would kick start one of the most violent and socially destructive periods in history. The Reformation. The Reformation comes in two separate waves, the former, during the 16th Century, saw a break in the church whereby great swathes of European Christian left the Catholic faith and followed a new path to salvation in Protestantism.

Whilst less than 3% of the population in London, Cornwall and Devon were Catholics, more than 20% of those living in Lancashire still followed the faith. Whilst some of the major recusant families like the Towneleys helped hide priests from persecution. I know what you're thinking, what the does this have to do with the Butter Pie? I promise we will get to that, Butter Pies are synonymous with Catholicism. Trust me.

Within years there were calls to abolish anti-Catholic laws. It was not such a religious time, society had moved on but also Catholics were needed to be kept onside if England were to raise enough men to fight Napoleon on the continent. By 1830 Catholic persecution had all but been repealed in English law and numbers began to rise.

Some had desires to use Liverpool or Manchester merely as the port in which to leave for America or Australia but never made it that far. Either falling ill, exhausting their monies before tickets became available or simply falling prey to criminals, a great number of the migrants were left, trapped, in Lancashire.
