Councils across Lancashire spent almost £2million helping people on benefits with their housing costs last year. Local authorities across England and Wales spent a total of £111.21 million in discretionary housing payments in the year to March 2023, data from the Department for Work & Pensions has revealed.
The situation in Lancashire reflects the national picture. A total of £141.54 million was paid out by councils in England and Wales in the year to March 2022. Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council paid out the most in our region at £233,462. That’s followed by Preston at £200,319, Blackpool at £189,744, and Lancaster at £187,026. Preston cost the most per claim at an average of £860 for each one.
