Kindhearted landlord left with nothing but a bed after cruel tenant stripped him of everything he owned
A kindhearted landlord was left with nothing but his bed and his beloved painting set after being cheated out of his assets by a cruel tenant.
He said he had found a treatment but it would cost £103,000 and asked Mr Schofield to lend him the difference. A short time later, he claimed he had paid the money to a clinic but the doctor had disappeared with his payment and the clinic would no longer treat him. As time went on, Conway claimed he needed money for treatment, and emphasised how much pain he was in. "At every stage Mr Schofield's concern was for the defendant's health and how he would get his money. However there was no medical treatment. Conway gambled the money away."
In May 2019, Conway was arrested and interviewed by the police. He made no comment in interview and was released on bail. A few days later, Mr Schofield received a badly spelled text message, informing him he would be entitled to claim Universal Credit but would need to apply online. When officers visited Schofield to check his phone, he claimed he had thrown it in the sea, but when they dialled his number they heard it ringing from under a sofa.
"I didn't believe the police when they first approached me. I still believed Derek's lies because of the hold he had over me."
