National Milk Bars were once a common sight across the country
Formerly boasting 17 establishments in Wales and North West England, the National Milk Bars chain is now predominantly confined to the annals of history - except in Ellesmere Port, where business continues as usual for the many customers popping in for a pot of tea.
These cafes were once a common sight in Wales, with 17 branches spanning from Aberystwyth to Rhyl and beyond. Frothy coffees, creamcakes, ice creams and milkshakes were their specialty - and even The Beatles were known to pop into their local milk bar on Lime Street, close to Liverpool Lime Street station.
Managing director John Frost said at the time: "We've lost the model, as it were, of National Milk Bar. It's become out of date really with the next generation, so if we were looking to continue we'd probably have to upgrade and become a more coffee-like operation. But that market is pretty flooded at the moment."
