The inquest's conclusion brings to an end a family's long wait for answers
A young autistic woman who died while a patient at a psychiatric ward more than 250 miles from home did not intend to take her own life, an inquest jury has concluded. There were 'missed opportunities' to find Lauren Bridges a bed closer to home, jurors found.
A conclusion of misadventure was also recorded. Jurors said they didn't believe Lauren intended to take her own life. During her evidence, Ms Bridges said the family had 'significant concerns about the care she received at Cheadle Royal, particularly in relation to night agency staff and the lack of compassion shown by staff'.
Lauren remained at the unit at the time of her death. One specialist said in a report in November 2021 that being on the Pankhurst Unit, a single sex PICU at the hospital, through no fault of staff, was causing her 'iatrogenic deterioration' - a medical term for harm caused by mental health treatment - as the ward was 'wholly ill-equipped to meet her needs.'
