Brenda Pilling and Darren Horsford starved and failed to seek treatment for their dogs
People have said justice system is "not fit for purpose" to deal with animal abuse and those who perpetrate it after a couple escaped jail.
Pilling claimed she'd fed Missy a diet of pasta, chicken, rice, salmon and eggs since she had begun to lose weight around mid-May, but that this had not brought about an improvement. The 43-year-old stated they'd then taken her to the PDSA, who "said there was nothing wrong with the dog", but the charity said they had no records of a visit.
District Judge Gywn Jones also banned the pair from owning or keeping animals, and ordered a fourth dog called Bud, who the couple took ownership of in August last year, to be seized. Pilling began crying at this in the courtroom.The case has led many to call for laws around animal abuse to be changed, as they consider the punishment given to Pilling and Horsford too lenient for the crime.
