Leading spinal surgeon's botched operations left patients losing blood and in devastating pain, damming investigation report reveals
A spinal surgeon has been slammed for serious failings after a host of patients complained they had been left with devastating results from going under his knife. In 2021, an inquiry was launched into the former Salford Royal Hospital consultant John Bradley Williamson and his treatment of some 130 patients.
The surgeon’s 'surgical technique was judged to be poor in multiple cases. Issues with screw placement and screws being misplaced were identified in a high number of cases', reads the damming report. “This was further evidenced during discussion with patients about their experience under [the consultant surgeon].
The conclusions of the report reads: “Significant professional issues have been identified in [Mr Williamson’s] practice. These issues have been identified through review of the available medical records, discussion and written accounts received from patients and written accounts from staff. In response to the findings, Mr Williamson told the Manchester Evening News: “I have always strived to provide the very best care for patients. I am taking time to reflect on the report findings.
She was diagnosed with spina bifida as a baby and first operated on by Mr Williamson in 1997, aged 11. Ms Madeley, from Bolton, told the Sunday Times she has been left with 'chronic pain and a twisted body after nine operations to treat her scoliosis, or curvature of the spine'. “As a disabled person, I’m always going to need the NHS and to have that trust broken is a hard thing to navigate. That’s been the hardest thing, the complete lack of trust in people who are meant to be caring for me.”
