Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been a vocal critic of the League Cup semi-finals being a two-legged affair
The League Cup will reportedly switch to one-legged semi-finals from next season, in a move which will certainly please Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
In the past, the EFL had resisted scrapping two-legged semi-finals in the League Cup due to the financial implications. The tournament contributes to roughly one-third of the EFL’s domestic TV deal with Sky Sports, with the fact that the semi-finals take place in January midweek slots where no other football is played making those particular matches extra appealing to broadcasters.
The Reds, who will be looking to defeat AFC Bournemouth and progress to this season’s League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night, last reached the semi-finals in 2021/22 on their way to winning the competition. Liverpool defeated Arsenal 2-0 on aggregate, but Klopp would raise his complaints before the tie.
