Far from the tales of loneliness and rural regret, my mental health has improved living in a sparsely populated area 🖋️antoniahoyle
has improved living in a sparsely populated area. In London, the anonymity and loneliness of crowds made me anxious. A single conversation on a dog walk here feels infinitely more uplifting than a thousand hostile stares on a Tube journey.. Having bribed my husband out of London with the promise of a dog, I find myself, a lifelong dog sceptic, as much in love with our Labrador as the rest of the family – and he’s not the kind of canine who would be happy cooped up in a city.
Admittedly, rural winters are gruelling. No streetlights mean leaving the house without a torch or a car after 4pm from November to March is an impossibility, and for months we’re forced into semi-hibernation. But that just makes the spring so much sweeter. The russet-red leaves currently on our crabapple tree are as arresting as London’s finest architecture, and when Chas and Dave, the ducks who migrate to our pond as the weather warms, re-appeared last week, we were so excited we practically threw them a party.Increasingly, I am convinced that nature holds the key to happiness and that the shops and theatres within our reach in London had nothing on the simple thrill of watching our tulips unfurl.
As a double-income family able to work from home, my husband and I are lucky. This week, a report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Business found a “rural premium” meansThat those struggling here are treated as an afterthought by authorities makes the prospect of fickle city dwellers selling up at the sniff of discomfort even more infuriating. Not that the estate agents peddling statistics for profit will ever tempt me to move.
