Some Tory MPs have privately expressed dismay ever since Rishi Sunak decided to pluck Anderson from the backbenches and give him the platform of deputy party chairman. Some felt he was being used as a performing monkey, a crude attempt to connect with voters out of the reach of a geeky, millionaire Prime Minister.
MPs in the “Blue Wall” fear that Anderson is the biggest turn off possible to middle-class voters who are flocking to the Lib Dems and Labour. For them, his is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and furore, signifying nothing other than their own leader’s weakness., someone who can highlight problems the party needs to address to hold onto both “Red Wall” voters but also the “just about managing” swing voters in marginal seats.
Even while his hero Boris Johnson was ploughing on with the green agenda, it was Anderson who was among the first to warn that costs could be prohibitive for the less well-off. “Mention ‘the net zero journey’ to people in Ashfield and they will look at you as if you have just arrived from another planet,” he said. After the Uxbridge by-election, the narrative of not taxing people into a green future has been heeded not just by the Tory leadership but by Keir Starmer too.
Similarly, Anderson’s long-held attacks on Starmer “not knowing what a woman is” were part of the backdrop that led to Labour’s new policy of ditchingEven though most Labour MPs loathe the deputy Tory chairman’s provocative remarks about food banks and food poverty, some quietly agree with his basic argument that cooking and budgeting skills can help the poorest – if offered supportively and not judgementally.
