Royal Variety compere Lee Mack teased the late Prince Philip infront of the nation, but not everyone found the funny side
Comedian and actor Lee Mack made a cheeky gag during tonight's Royal Variety Performance, referencing the late Prince Philip.
Addressing Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex up in the balcony of the Royal Albert Hall, compere Lee went on to quip: "I look forward to meeting you both after the show. I've been told all about Royal etiquette. I don't want to make the mistake I made on my first Royal Variety Performance in 2002.
"And the number one rule which I got wrong last time was to never kiss them on the lips. Honestly, I thought Prince Philip was going to punch my lights out!""I love Lee Mack but joking about Prince Philip in that way is far too cheeky. Especially given the fact the Queen only passed a few months back. There's a time and a place," was one of the comments.
Some viewers at home didn't find an issue with the joke however, as one person said: "He's a comedian! Of course he's going to make a joke of it. That's literally HIS JOB. Everyone needs to chill".
