Then, often too late, it is reappraised and venerated.were the finest dwellings of their kind, built for the city's richest and most powerful families. But between the 1920s and 1970s, many of these medieval, Tudor, Stewart and Georgian halls were demolished.
Such projects were the core of an equal, modern society but collateral damage came in the loss of what would today be considered some of the city's greatest treasures. Here they are in alphabetical order.An Ordnance Survey map from 1848 shows the site of Armley Old Hall, a stone's throw from Armley Prison which stands there today.The hall belonged to the Hopton family, of Mirfield.
The family were ardent Royalists during the English Civil and supporting the losing side, had their land and the hall sequestered afterwards. Information on the hall itself is scant but it must have been sizeable as it was reduced by 26 rooms in the 1680s. Armley Hall is thought to have been demolished not long after. Today the site, off Hall Lane, is occupied by housing.
