The country has been divided between rival governments for most of the past decade – one in the east, the other in the capital Tripoli, with widespread neglect of infrastructure a result.
The disaster brought a rare moment of unity, as government agencies across the country rushed to help the affected areas. More than 3,000 bodies were buried by Thursday morning, the minister said, while another 2,000 were still being processed.
