Concerns were also raised about the impact of saltwater discharge on protected habitats and priority species
A Stormont minister’s permission to dig controversial gas caverns off the Co Antrim coast may have been granted in “contravention of the ministerial code”, a court heard on Tuesday.
He highlighted concerns from NGOs, the local community and even within the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs that the project has climate as well as marine implications. Mr Fegan highlighted how it first received planning permission over a decade ago and that the gas demand figures were from 2010.
Mr Fegan outlined party opposition from Sinn Fein and Alliance who held four of the seven executive seats at the time Edwin Poots granted the licence and said the project should have been sent to the Executive for a decision as it is “cross cutting” and “controversial”. The court also heard how the gas caverns were “not considered to be essential… all the gas supply requirements are being met by GB”.
