Lionesses told they have 'inspired millions' despite losing 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final.

Fans who packed bars and public spaces for the 11am kick-off dared to believe that manager Sarina Wiegman’s team could fulfill their status as narrow favourites to win the game’s biggest prize. The first half goal scored by Spain captain Olga Carmona, capitalising after England’s Lucy Bronze lost possession in midfield, proved sufficient to separate the sides during a pulsating encounter.

The Lionesses’ simply could not match Spain’s creative flair, their best effort coming from Lauren Hemp’s curling shot from 15 yards which hit the crossbar. As the players’ sunk to their knees at the final whistle, Alex Scott, the former England star-turned-BBC pundit, reminded an estimated TV audience of 13.7m viewers what the Lionesses had achieved over the past month.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, who attended the game in Sydney on behalf of the Government, also spoke of how proud she was of the team, saying: “They inspired millions across the country with glorious performances, moments of magic and relentless determination and desire.” Members of the England team could be in line for recognition in the New Year honours list with No 10 currently considering how best to celebrate the Lionesses’ World Cup run.
