Little Simz’ fifth album is a confident, mature and brilliant record, writes katiesol Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fruitful collaborations colour the album, though it is an unmistakably Simz experience. The 28-year-old rapper has once again worked with producer Inflo, while angel-voiced Cleo Sol features and co-writes a number of tracks, resulting in an album that is rich, rounded and forthright – and heavily influenced by the mysterious collective SAULT .
It’s a record that puts self-love at its core; boundary-setting and faith in yourself are frequent motifs – particularly on the gorgeous “Silhouette” with its choir of gospel-inflected voices telling you that “God’s with you always”. It may be just 10 songs long but each is a mini-epic, in particular “Broken”, which is a searing dissection of the trauma of the black British experience, the inherited anxieties and systemic poverty. “Man, this week has been tough, been saying it for a year,” she raps between choruses of voices singing the repeated refrain: “Feeling broken and you don’t exist/When you’re feeling broken and you cannot fix it.
