Drivers have been urged to avoid the area after a serious crash
A stretch of the M56 has been fully shut off this afternoon after a serious crash.
The westbound carriageway is currently shut between junction seven for Bowdon and junction nine for the M6. Emergency services are on the scene. Traffic is also being held on the eastbound carriageway so an air ambulance can land. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area.A diversion route has been put in place. A tweet posted by TfGM said: "Due to a serious incident the #M56 is currently closed W/B from J7 #Bowden.
"Diversion route in place via A556 & M6. Follow the black circle. Delays are currently up to 40 mins with congestion back to #J5 #ManchesterAirport Avoid the area if possible #TfGMtraffic." National Highways said: "The #M56 is closed westbound between J7 and J9 following a serious collision.
