LIVE: Race to become the next Prime Minister hots up - Rishi Sunak's camp urges Boris Johnson to prove claim he 'has more than 100 backers'
Conservative leadership candidates will spend this weekend shoring up support from MPs as the race to become to the UK's next Prime Minister continues.
Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s public backers have put him beyond the threshold of 100 nominations from MPs required to be on the ballot for the Tory leadership race. Although he and his former boss Boris Johnson have yet to declare they are running to be the next Prime Minister, they both sit ahead of Penny Mordaunt, who was the first to announce she was standing on Friday.
Mr Johnson, who told allies he is 'up for it', flew back to London from his holiday in the Dominican Republic last night. He is expected to officially throw his hat in the ring soon, Sky News reports.Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt is also trying to drum up support from Tory colleagues after becoming the first to confirm her candidacy to replace Liz Truss.
Tory MPs will vote on Monday, and two candidates will be put forward to the Tory membership unless one pulls out, with a result being announced on Friday. Candidates have until 2pm on Monday to secure the 100 nominations, limiting the ballot to a maximum of three candidates.
