Republican candidates will be jostling for second place in the first TV debate of the presidential race tonight; clear frontrunner Donald Trump will be missing, but he's set to appear in an interview with Tucker Carlson.

Donald Trump won't be there - but he's appearing in an interview15:45:19As we've been reporting, Florida governor Ron DeSantis is currently in second place behind Donald Trump in the polls.

Mr Ramaswamy is an avid Trump supporter but has set himself up as a successor to the former president. But their relationship has since frayed, with Mr Trump taking credit for Mr DeSantis's election win and attacking him on his policies. He also signed a law that bans state and federal funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programmes at state colleges and universities.

South Carolina senator Tim Scott, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and former vice president Mike Pence and also up to compete. You'll see a former president surrender himself to one of the country's grimmest jails to be booked in his latest indictment.
